This Festival is also known as Okere Juju festival and has been in existence since the 15th century. The Awan’kere Festival popularly known as, is an annual festival celebrated by the Itsekiri people of Okere in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

This festival is celebrated in July and it has become one of Nigeria’s national festivals. Music, singing and dancing are all part of the celebration. During the festival, people sing to God and give sacrifices for a good harvest and for a steady Niger River.

The first part of the festival is ritualistic and closed to the public, but the second part is a big party where people wear masks.

We were happy to have been part of an historical event, we are excited for next “Awankere Festival”.
